Ex-soldier charged with 5 child rapes

ALEXANDRA – Ex-soldier in custody on five child rape charges.

An Alex man was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending a further hearing on 27 September for the alleged rape of five children in separate incidents.

The 48-year-old accused, said to be a former soldier in the South African National Defence Force, is alleged to have raped the children aged five to 10 years old early in September this year at his sister’s flat where he also stayed. He allegedly met the children who knew him and called him uncle [name withheld] at a nearby Spaza shop waiting to buy sweets.

It is said he lured them to the flat by promising to give them more money so that they could buy more sweets. At the flat, he allegedly undressed and raped them before letting them go. Some of the victims reported the abuse to their parents who in turn reported to the police but the suspect disappeared from the area and was traced to Limpopo where he was arrested.
