What the Men’s Clinic will do for men

ALEXANDRA – The City of Johannesburg, in partnership with Anova Health4men, has launched a Men's Clinic at the 8th Avenue Clinic in Alexandra.

The Men’s Clinic at the 8th Avenue Clinic in Alexandra will conduct a variety of medical check-ups for men, which will include screenings for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), TB and HIV/Aids and will also offer advice through health talks.

Lebogang Motlafi, a nurse mentor at the Parktown-based NGO, Anova Health4men project, said the Men’s Clinic would serve as an educational clinic on lifestyle diseases and also conduct screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes and so forth. She said the clinic would not be treating the sick. Sick patients will have to go to the main clinic to be attended to, Motlafi told Alex News in an interview on the role of the Men’s Clinic.

Motlafi said the Health4men project had over the years developed extensive expertise in all areas of men’s sexual health, including other areas of focus, which will be a priority for the Men’s Clinic and will involve the screening of men who have sex with other men. This, she said, will be done in an effort to combat the prevalence of HIV and STIs in this group of sexual orientation, which will include HIV treatment and also take care of mental health for men.

Health4men project manager, Charlotte Modibedi said the idea of the Men’s Clinic was to provide healthcare specifically to men by male healthcare workers who are trained and competent in discharging healthcare to men.

Modibedi urged men to come forward and use the facility which will operate on Tuesdays only from 7.30am to 4pm, and said men were free to consult the healthcare workers on any other health concerns they may have such as prostate, testicular and anal health issues.
