Murder accused’s 60-year sentence commuted to 20

ALEXANDRA - A murder's 60-year sentence commuted to 20 years.

An Alex man, who pleaded not guilty to murder, was sentenced by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to an effective 20-year imprisonment sentence for the offence.

The accused, 25-year-old George Mondlana, was sentenced to 30 years for the murder and another 30 years for the possession and use of an illegal firearm. The sentences will run concurrently and were commuted to a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment.

Mondlana was found guilty of shooting dead a man known to him on 2 January 2014 during a quarrel between the two at a party on 2nd Avenue. The accused disappeared and was arrested after the police searched for him for four months.
