iPhone nabs robbery suspects

ALEXANDRA - iPhone helps nab Sunninghill supermarket robbers.

Three men from Hillbrow were remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation for an alleged armed robbery at a Spar in Sunninghill recently.

A 41-year-old and two 38-year-old suspects, said to have been part of a 10-man gang, were traced through an iPhone stolen from a victim during the robbery. Their accomplices are at large and are still wanted by the police.

They allegedly stormed the supermarket at 6.30pm on 8 August this year where they took an undisclosed amount of cash and personal items including cellphones, watches and money from staff and customers.

The gang was said to have manned the entrance and only let in customers who they then prevented from exiting. The hostages were forced to lie down, searched and their items were then taken. The suspects emptied the store’s tills of cash before disappearing.

Signals from the reported stolen iPhone traced the three to one of their homes in Hillbrow, which led to their arrests.

The case continues.
