Men receive heavy sentences for house robbery

ALEXANDRA – Three men sentenced heavily for Bramley home robbery.

Three Alex men recently received heavy sentences for a robbery they committed at a Bramley residence in August last year. An accomplice, who escaped, is wanted by Alex police.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court sentenced Michael Maswanganye, who has several criminal records, to 18 years; Nhlanhla Mkhwananzi, with two criminal records, to 17 years; and first-time offender, Alex Lugongolo, to 15 years in prison.

The accused, who were armed with knives, overpowered the homeowner one morning in early August last year as he struggled to open a gate which had been tampered with. The suspects kicked and searched the victim and stole some of his personal belongings before dragging him into the house.

One of the family members managed to alert security and police, leading to their arrest at the gate as they attempted to flee. One suspect was arrested in the house and, when asked for his identity, claimed that the victim was his friend.

Some of the stolen items were recovered.
