Stay away from #OccupyLuthuliHouse

JOBURG – ANC members to march to Luthuli House to reiterate their call to have President Jacob Zuma removed from office, but public urged to stay away from this protest.

Security has been beefed up at the ANC headquarters, Luthuli House, ahead of today’s protest by a faction of ANC members who said they want to save the organisation.

Party members are expected to #OccupyLuthuliHouse in the bid to demand President Jacob Zuma’s resignation and the resignation of the entire National Executive Council (NEC) of the party.

Police officers are present at Luthuli House with the march expected to get messy. One of the organisers, Gugu Ndima, has advised members of the public to stay away from the protest. Ndima confirmed that protesters will be marching peacefully to the ANC headquarters, but said the organisers were receiving violence threats.

“We are going to Luthuli House as children of the ANC, if there are any bullets, we will take them,” Ndima said when speaking on Radio 702 on 5 August.

Other factions of the ANC who are against the protest have vowed to protect the ANC and Luthuli House against the #OccupyLuthuliHouse protesters. The ANC Women’s League has labelled the protesters as cowards and not ANC members.

On 2 September, the ANC Youth League stormed and disrupted the press briefing where organisers were due to give details about the campaign.

Huge traffic delays are expected around ANC headquarters, Metro police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minaar has urged motorists to be patient while driving around that area.
