City leads fight against scourge of abuse in Alex

ALEXANDRA – The City of Johannesburg is in the forefront against drug, women and children abuse.

The City of Johannesburg is leading the fight against the abuse of drugs, women and children that are ravaging the impoverished township of Alexandra.

A workshop to drum up support and drive the message home about the dangers of this scourge in the community was held at the Sankopano Centre which saw more than 100 women and men and community organisations participating.

A social worker, Mary Moyaba, of the Social Benefits Unit of the Department of Social Development, said the workshop was organised in celebration of Women’s Month, August, and takes cognisance of the fact that women bore the brunt of the abuse. “We have too much focus on the abusers of the drugs and women and children without attending to the welfare of the broken victims and communities,” Moyaba said.

“We now want to focus on the healing process for the victims as well, while at the same time not lessening our energies on campaigns against this scourge which is tearing our families and communities apart.”

Her comments come in the wake of increasing rape incidents in which fathers have turned into predatory animals against their own teenage daughters in the home. The aim of the workshop is to arm the women with tools to use when faced with the abuses and be able to react in a way that does not jeopardise their lives, Moyaba said.

Participating organisations included Sanca, Famsa, Khulisa, Adapt, Women in Faith Against Drug Abuse, National Association of Child and Youth Care Workers, Young Substance Abuser Solution, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, the police, Metro police and Lifeline.
