Rapist taxi driver gets life sentence

ALEXANDRA - Court gives rapist life sentence for rape of 26-year-old.

The 2014 rape of a Tembisa woman (26) was avenged in Women’s Month by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court when the perpetrator, Ntokozo Ngwenya (36), an Alex taxi driver, was sentenced to life for three accounts of rape.

Despite claims of a relationship between the two, the court found him guilty on the strength of the evidence and a social worker’s recommendation.

The accused from 10th Avenue, who also has a home in Tembisa, raped the victim at his Alex home at about midnight on 1 June this year.

He was hired by relatives of the victim’s boyfriend to transport the victim and others they had invited to a housewarming party in Kempton Park back to their homes.

The accused first introduced himself to her and they had a casual talk over drinks with others at the party.

Later, when she wanted to disembark from the taxi with the last group in Tembisa, Ngwenya asked her to stay and promised to take her home. But he asked her to first accompany him to his Alex home to attend to a family emergency.

They drove past her home, even after she asked to be dropped off.

On the way, she refused his offer of food and, at his home, he held onto her handbag while talking to his family.

She asked to use the bathroom, and after that was made to wait in his room where he later found her talking to her boyfriend on her cellphone. She gave him the phone and Ngwenya assured the boyfriend that he would take her home.

He then became angry, called her names, threw her cellphone away, and flung her against a cabinet. He then said he was going to teach her not to go out with strangers and said he would kill her.

He strangled her until she became unconscious and when she came round, he was raping her without a condom and then forced her to perform oral sex while pulling her hair .

When he was done, he threatened to kill her and her family if she disclosed the incident. She overheard Ngwenya plotting the killings with some people telephonically.

The rapist then took her home at dawn and lied to her mother, saying that they were delayed by a punctured tyre. He was arrested two days later.

The social worker’s report stated that the ordeal had made the victim mistrustful of men and led to her breaking up with her boyfriend.
