Gardener and buddy arrested for robbery

ALEXANDRA – Gardener to appear in court for robbery.

Two Alex men, who live on the same property on 11th Avenue, were remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation for a house robbery and malicious damage to property at a Morningside Manor home where one of them was the gardener.

One of them allegedly stole a gun, an Ipad and R600 in cash from a safe he broke open, while the other stole a cellphone from the domestic worker who they had tied up. The incident occurred at noon on 10 June this year.

The two were captured on CCTV entering the home through a back gate, carrying an empty bag. One of them was later captured exiting with the bag seemingly full.

Once inside, the gardener’s co-accused allegedly accosted the maid who was cleaning outside, dragged her into the house, ordered her onto the floor, tied her hands with shoelaces, covered her head with a cloth and a black bag, and guarded her. The victim then heard pounding noises which stopped after a while when the alarm went off.

Her guard then disappeared and the gardener came to her and asked what had happened.

A security patrol, alerted to the robbery by the alarm, informed police and both went to the house where the gardener informed them that burglars had gained entry through a fence. Police found that the fence had not been cut.

They searched him and found the gate keys in his possession. They viewed CCTV footage, which showed him and the accomplice allegedly entering, and the accomplice exiting the home. The police then traced the IPad signal which led them to a home in Alexandra, which turned out to be the gardener’s home.

There they found a man and a woman but, despite the signal indicating the home, they couldn’t find the IPad. They returned to the robbery site and returned to Alex with the gardener, who admitted the place was his home and the man, who was still there, was his housemate.

The man was still dressed in the clothes he was allegedly observed wearing on the CCTV footage. Both were arrested but the stolen items were not recovered.

The case continues.
