Woman defrauds elderly man of R185 000

ALEXANDRA - Woman in R185 000 SIM card fraud will reappear in court soon.

Thembeka Fatyela, a 40-year-old woman who admitted to defrauding an elderly man of R185 000, who is out on bail, will appear at Alexandra Magistrates’ Court soon for sentencing.

It was alleged that on 20 January, Fatyela, who worked at a Vodashop franchise outlet at the Glen Shopping Centre and who was suspected to be part of a syndicate, defrauded the victim of the money, part of which was recovered. She did this by swapping his cellphone SIM card, enabling her to access and transfer the money from his bank account into her own.

The victim discovered the fraud after he was not able to make calls on his cellphone which was constantly busy. He contacted the Vodashop head office which investigated and referred him to the franchise where his SIM card had been swapped, leading to her arrest.

Her account was frozen and R100 000 was recovered.
