American choir performs in Alex

ALEXANDRA - American and Alex choirs share stage

The Kings Theatre on 2nd Avenue hosted a 26-member American choir which entertained the audience with their captivating brand of music.

The choir was in the country on a three-week musical escapade that saw them also perform at the Methodist Church in central Joburg, as well as in Cape Town, Durban, Polokwane and East London.

According to the tour guide, the choir’s members, who are in various professions, were in the country more as tourists known to each other from varsity days, who band together for visits, international music tours and cultural exchanges.

The occasion was fronted by a local religious choir, House of Melody. The two choirs sang moving religious renditions, and also combined to sing a few songs under the guidance of the visitors’ conductor Tommy Lynch.

The choir’s tour guide Asanda Daza said the group preferred to perform at non-competitive occasions as part of their cultural exchange, which has taken them to many countries over the years.

“They are interested in visiting, singing to and with others in diverse settings, including in rural marginalised areas, to exchange each other’s rich cultures and heritages,” Daza said.

She said they may be back in the country soon.
