Child killed after dad opens fire on police

ALEXANDRA – Child dies in shootout.

A child was killed in a 3rd Avenue shack in the early hours of 8 July after the suspect, who is wanted for the killing of a cash in transit guard at Pan Africa Mall last month, opened fire on police.

Alex Police Station commander Colonel Nhluvuko Zondi said the 41-year-old suspect, who is also the father of the six-year-old child, sustained head injuries during the shooting and was in hospital for treatment under police guard.

He said the mother of the child was also in the shack but was not injured during the incident.

The shooting was initiated by the suspect after the police’s tactical unit had ordered him to come out of the shack. He was subsequently overpowered and arrested. An unlicensed revolver and ammunition were found in his possession.

Zondi said the suspect was allegedly part of a gang which killed the guard on the morning of 5 June this year, in which an undisclosed amount cash of was stolen. The suspect had muti wrapped around his arms and body, presumably to protect him.

He will appear in court when discharged from hospital.
