Residents invited to tell Alex’s story

ALEXANDRA - Residents invited to contribute in telling Alex's heritage story

Residents and others with knowledge of the historical and present day Alexandra are invited to assist in compiling information on the township for display at the Alexandra Heritage Centre.

This as the centre is nearing structural completion.

Social researcher, Thabo Mopasi said in anticipation of the user phase of the facility, preparation was in progress to document and archive this information. He said this information would be drawn from what has already been gathered and added to by those with an intimate knowledge of the first township in the country.

He invited all with such knowledge to come forward so that they won’t feel left out when this story is told and enjoyed by visitors, scholars and children.

Mopasi said the information to be exhibited under the title, Putting the best foot forward, will also be kept in film form drawn from residents’ accounts of simple, brilliant and all other relevant stories. He said professionals would be engaged to help validate the information for factual authenticity and make it a heritage to be proud of.

Mopasi said a parallel process was also underway for artists to contribute through drawings of significant people, features and moments in the township’s evolution. He said this art would help enliven and make the story more poignant while also generating an income for the artists who were engaged through a tender process.
