ANC knocks on doors for votes

ALEXANDRA - ANC goes door to door in an election campaign

African National Congress activists braved chilly and rainy weather in Alex on 13 June in a week-long door-to-door campaign in preparation for the highly anticipated 3 August municipal elections.

Party councillors and speaker of the provincial legislature Connie Bapela traversed the township streets, knocking on shack doors with many seemingly patient to hear their message.

According to Bapela, the campaign will continue until two days before the polls. “We urge people to vote for us because we have the best policies to implement for change and development,” she said, adding that they informed the residents on what government had achieved and their future plans. “We have a proven record which we will build on and urge the residents to vote for us,” she added.

Councillor Lilian Kekana said despite the weather conditions many residents were receptive to their message. “We informed them on what was done and challenges in the last five years and our plans for the next five years,” she said.

Resident Sebenzile Gamede said door-to-door campaigning gave them an opportunity to engage directly with the contesting parties. “It enables us to quiz the officials and look at them in the eye to assess their commitment and genuineness, unlike at rallies where they just speak and leave,” he said.
