Thief sentenced, stolen car returned

ALEXANDRA - Thief nabbed in stolen vehicle is sentenced.

The Alex Magistrates’ Court recently sentenced a man found guilty of vehicle theft in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni, to three years in prison, which was commuted to nine months.

The case was reported in Son helps nab thieves of father’s car, week ending 10 June.

The accused, 25-year-old Glen Malatjie, who was out on R3 000 bail for the case, was arrested on 16 March with another suspect, who was released due to lack of evidence.

Malatjie was arrested after the vehicle owner’s son, who had been informed of the theft, saw the vehicle with its number plates still on being driven in Tembisa by strangers.

The son followed it until Allandale Road where he met police who followed the car and arrested the two suspects after verifying that the car had been reported stolen. The starter mechanism of the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla valued at R23 000, had been tampered with. The vehicle was returned to its owner, once the suspects were arrested.
