Magistrate in attempted hijacking

ALEXANDRA – Magistrate in attempted hijacking at known hotspot.

Crime in Alex spares no one and recently hit a servant of justice at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

The female magistrate experienced a failed hijacking by a man in his mid-20s at 8.18am on 9 May while driving to work. The man was arrested on 26 May for a 23 May business robbery in Alex and linked to the hijacking through an identification by the magistrate. He now faces two charges.

The hijacking occurred on the corner of 13th Avenue and Vincent Tshabalala Road, a known hijacking hotspot.

The victim, who was waiting at a robot with her vehicle’s doors locked and windows closed, said she watched the accused who was dressed in jeans, T-shirt and white spotty hat walk strangely into Vincent Tshabalala Road from 13th Avenue. Her vehicle was boxed in between two vehicles. The accused suddenly walked straight towards her vehicle and tried but failed to open the locked passenger door while pointing a gun at her.

Overwhelmed by fear, she managed to drive off to the side and forward for some distance before she stopped. She said she then noticed the accused walking casually away, back towards Alexandra, before she went on to report the incident at a police station.

The accused, who has been remanded in custody, will reappear in court on 15 June for his bail application. The case may be heard at another court.
