Toy gun robbers receive 15 years behind bars

ALEXANDRA - Two men receive 15-year sentences for a cellphone robbery using a toy gun.

George Mokolo (22) and Christopher Sehlake (23) from Alexandra were each sentenced by Alexandra Magistrates’ Court to 15 years in prison for the robbery of cellphones from a 25-year-old woman and a 15-year-old girl.

The robbery occurred in March this year on the corner of 9th Road and 2nd Avenue in Kew when the victims were returning from a grocery shop. The accused searched and robbed them of a Nokia cellphone and Vodaphone after forcing them to lie down at gunpoint. The robbery was observed by a passing motorist who alerted police officers he found nearby changing a vehicle tyre. After the robbery, the accused seemingly walked towards the police who stopped, searched them and retrieved the cellphones.

A third man was arrested after the accused led the police officers to him. The victims, however, exonerated him saying he watched the robbery from across the road and came to apologise to them for the incident. He was found to have a previous five-year suspended sentence for a robbery committed in Roodepoort in 2007.

The gun used in the robbery was found to be a toy.
