Tavern turned gym to save Alexandrians’ health

ALEXANDRA - New gym at former tavern hopes to restore residents' health and fitness levels.

Alex health fanatics and fitness freaks may soon be pumping, pushing, running and jumping for joy with the recently opened Reflex Fitness Gym on 15th Avenue in Alexandra.

Regardless of race, social and economic standing, the country is in the throes of a health epidemic with the rise of obesity from poor and unhealthy eating habits as well as bad lifestyles collectively harming the body, mind and soul.

Gym owners Joseph Malunga and Debrain Mdluli recently relocated their business from a smaller venue in the township which, within three months of operating, could not match the demand from individual and groups for services and advice on cardio, aerobics, body toning and strength, weight loss, nutrition and healthy eating habits.

Their equipment at the gym includes cycles, plate-loaded and running machines, weights and dumbbells suitable for most clients from body builders, professional sports people, weight lifters, gogos, mkhulus and the pot-bellied eager to shed the flab.

The owners said poverty was not an excuse to recede into a life of misery and physical ill-health as their services were affordable, readily available and within reach. The gym currently has 120 registered members. Monthly gym fees cost R150. The gym is open seven days a week including holidays.

Mdluli said the facility was a former tavern and the conversion attests to the public’s desire to have positive and cost-effective services. “They will no longer bear travel costs and huge fees at brand name gyms and dangers from poorly-equipped gyms,” Malunga said.

They intend opening more gyms to help restore the health of residents in Alexandra.
