Innovating the future world of work

JOHANNESBURG – A youth career guidance programme encourages pupils to take advantage of opportunities available to them.

The seventh and final instalment of the My Future My Career, a youth career guidance programme, was recently launched in Johannesburg.

In a statement, managing director of Primestars Marketing, the facilitator of the youth initiative, Martin Sweet said, “The My Future, My Career education project will encourage pupils to proactively explore and take full advantage of the career opportunities that exist for them, helping them to find their dream jobs where they can spend their lives doing something that they are passionate about and which contributes to the world.”

A statement about the initiative read, “Since its inception in 2009, the initiative has empowered and skilled close to 200 000 Grade 9 to 12 pupils from disadvantaged areas for free.”

The My Future, My Career is made up of 14 pre-recorded career guidance sessions, screened over seven weeks on selected Sunday mornings.

These sessions cover more than 120 different career choices and are aimed at assisting disadvantaged South African youth with career guidance. The programme is presented in episodes at cinemas which have been strategically selected for their convenience and accessibility for the pupils. Each pupil leaves each session with a booklet for future reference.

“The success of the programme over the years has created a platform for the public and private sector to partner effectively in delivering an impactful initiative to upskill thousands of young South Africans,” the statement read.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Mduduzi Manana said, “Young people have to make informed choices on their perspective careers. Our aim is to create the opportunity for all pupils, particularly those from impoverished schools, to access institutions of higher education and training by providing career guidance and counselling related to career choices.”

Sponsors whose contributions made the programme possible include AECI, Siyakha Education Trust, National Youth Development Agency, Gauteng City Region Academy, Vodacom, Tsogo Sun, Gearhouse, Kulula.com, Nutrifruit and Shine Solutions.

All stakeholders will receive a front row seat to the screening at Sandton Cinema and afterwards participate in a meet-and-greet session at the cinema with the pupils on 22 May.
