UPDATE: No shoutout at Pan Taxi Rank, says police

ALEXANDRA - A shootout took place earlier this morning between taxi associations.

UPDATE: 13 May 2016, 10am – Alexandra police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela has denied reports of a shootout between rival taxi associations at the Pan Africa Mall taxi rank early this morning.

Maphakela said he had been inundated by numerous calls from various media houses wanting to know about an early morning shooting incident in Alexandra’s Pan Taxi Rank.

“I can categorically say that there was no shooting at the taxi. I am there as I speak to you and our information is that some body dropped a huge load of planks and they made a sound similar to gun fire and people thought there was a shooting,” Maphakela said.

INITIAL REPORT: 13 May 2016, 8am – According to eyewitness reports, there has been a shootout at the Pan taxi rank in Alexandra this morning.

It is believed that the shootout was between taxi associations. There is currently a heavy police presence at the scene.

Hundreds of people have been left stranded since the shootout as there are currently no taxis at the rank.
