Olive Tree hosts second schools theatre festival

ALEXANDRA - Olive Tree to unearth talent at schools theatre festival

The Olive Tree Theatre continues to be the venue of choice for theatre lovers and for developing new artists and directors.

The theatre will host the second annual school’s theatre festival on 29 April for Grade 8 to 11 pupils. The schools involved will be Liberty College and Marlboro Gardens, Alex High, Realogile, Eastbank, KwaBhekilanga, Minerva and Pholosho secondary schools.

Event organiser Jessica Ndaba said they expected to upstage last year’s event. “This year, participants will have more freedom in crafting the scope, script writing and directing with facilitators playing a supportive [background] role,” said Ndaba.

“This is part of our theatre skills development objective and to unearth new talent.”

The casts will present 25-minute plays from a choice of topics such as education in the country, the effects of HIV/Aids in society, democracy, abuse and transgender issues.

A floating trophy will be won for the best production in the categories of ensemble, script writing and directing. Other prizes will also be given for the overall best actor and actress, cameo role and supporting actor.

The event will also be enlivened by a display of youthful talent from the play Birth by Joseph Komane, a Tswane University of Technology student.

“[The play] profiles dramatic, comical and tragic scenes of a rural girl’s life of trials and tribulations which end when she dies from her boyfriend’s abuse and a life of social ills in a tempting urban setting,” said Ndaba.
