Heritage site seeks artists, carpenters and metalworkers

ALEXANDRA - Artists, wood and metal workers sought for Alex Heritage Site work

A call for submissions has been made by the Library Special Projects company and the Joburg Development Agency (JDA) to artists, metal and woodwork-related small micro and medium enterprises for work required at the Alex Heritage Site.

The expected bids are for artistic depictions of the township’s social and economic life, while the wood and metal jobs are for shelving and cabinetry work. The submissions should be submitted to the Youth Advisory Centre at the Multi-Purpose Centre, 8th Avenue. They should include the submitting company’s profiles, work samples, banking details and tax clearance certificates. The deadline is 28 April.

There has been general public discontent about the project, said to be a failed white elephant, due to its delayed completion which has been 20 years in the making.

Thabo Mopasi, member of the Alex Heritage Site team which represents the community interest in the project, said the delay was concerning and, hopefully, it would be completed soon.

Mopasi said the structural work of the site was completed but there was still a problem with the water and electricity connections. This, he said, was caused by the delay in determining ownership of the site which the JDA and other relevant agencies were said to be addressing.

He urged eligible service providers not to lose the chance to be part of the development of an important initiative which will tell the true story of the township to the outside world. He also urged youths to make submissions and be part of sustaining the story and heritage of Alex.
