Employees sentenced for bakkie thefts

ALEXANDRA - Car dealership employees are sentenced for theft of cars. Read up on the crime here.

Two employees of a motor vehicle dealership were sentenced to prison terms of five and 10 years for the theft of new motor vehicles which were on sale on the company’s premises.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court sentenced driver, Muziwonke Mabasa (34) and security guard, Godfrey Munyai (31) for the theft of two Ford Ranger bakkies valued at R566 000 in total from a motor dealership in Bramley in February last year.

The court heard that the two suspects were observed on CCTV footage stealing the vehicles. Mabasa drove the first vehicle out of the dealership and Munyai let him out without recording the vehicle’s exit as per the company’s policy.

After a while, Mabasa was observed entering the dealership on foot. He then drove out of the premises in the second vehicle and again, Munyai didn’t record the car’s exit.

Investigations revealed that the two worked together in the theft by recording the two vehicles’ exits using registration numbers of vehicles which had already been sold by the company.

The vehicles have not been recovered.
