Suspected hijacker shot dead in Alex

ALEXANDRA – A suspected hijacker is shot dead in Alex and his two accomplices flee the scene.

A suspected hijacker died in a shootout with police in the notorious Marasteng section of Tsutsumani.

Two of his accomplices fled the scene and Alex police have launched a massive manhunt for them, said Alexandra Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela.

Maphakela said a car had been hijacked in Sandringham on 7 April between 8am and 9am. Police activated the tracker on the car which led them to Tsutsumani Village where they spotted the vehicle in the Marasteng section.

They then lay in wait for the suspects. The men arrived a little after 1pm driving a Toyota Avanza and one of them alighted from the vehicle and got into the hijacked car.

As the police closed in, the suspects opened fire. Officers returned fire and fatally wounded the man in the hijacked car.

The man’s accomplices sped off in the Avanza. Maphakela has appealed to anyone with information on their whereabouts to come forward.
