Man denied bail in murder case

ALEXANDRA - Man denied bail for a murder which was committed in 2014.

An Alex man, who is facing a charge of murder which was committed on 6 June 2014, was denied bail and remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court .

The accused, Nkosinathi Qika (24), has been in custody since his arrest in March last year after he handed himself in, claiming that he had done so after hearing that the victim who he had stabbed with a knife had died from his wounds.

The court heard that the incident occurred at about 10pm along Alfred Nzo Avenue when the deceased, Shaun Hlongwane, then 27 years of age, was walking with his brother. It was said that the brother crossed the street to talk to a friend and while waiting for his brother Qika approached Hlongwane and accused him of bumping into him, which the deceased denied.

It is claimed that Qika then threatened Hlongwane, left the scene and returned after a short while. It is said that he was wielding a knife with which he allegedly stabbed Qika from his face down to his chest. When the brother intervened, Hlongwane ran away. Paramedics attempted to stabilise the victim while transporting him to hospital, where he subsequently died.

Qika claimed that he handed himself in after hearing that the victim had died and that the police were looking for him in connection with the incident.

His bail application was delayed because of the investigation and his lack of legal representation.

The deceased’s family was said to be concerned with the delay in finalising the case.

The case continues.
