Guard on charge of cellphones theft

ALEXANDRA - A security guard was granted R1 000 bail by the Alexandra Magistrates' Court for the alleged theft of cellphones he was guarding.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court granted a former security guard R1 000 bail for a case of theft of cellphones.

The court heard that on 16 November last year, officials of MTN and Mvula Security company checked boxes containing iPhones that MTN was to sell through tender. They noticed that the bubble wrap on 21 of the boxes had been tampered with and ordered that they be resealed.

While doing so, holes were noticed in the boxes and on checking further, they discovered that more than 400 of the iPhones, valued at R1.5 million, were missing. The officials viewed surveillance camera footage and saw the security guard who was on duty at MTM’s premises at the time, allegedly tampering with the boxes and taking some of the phones. This resulted in his arrest.

The case continues.
