Truck driver charged with staged robbery

ALEXANDRA – The Alexandra Magistrates' Court granted bail of R1 000 each to six men accused of the robbery of a delivery vehicle.

The Alexandra Magistrates’ Court granted bail of R1 000 each to six men accused of holding up a delivery vehicle and robbing the crew. One of them was also charged with perjury.

The court heard that at about 9pm on 30 July last year, three of the men in a Ford Bantam bakkie allegedly stopped a bread delivery truck in Midrand and robbed its two-men crew of their cellphones and R7 200 from the bread sales. They also damaged the vehicle’s windows.

The robbers then drove away and abandoned the bakkie somewhere.

One of them went to Midrand Police Station where he reported that his bakkie had been stolen. While he was reporting the theft, the police received a report about the delivery truck robbery.

Police, who went to the crime scene, received a radio message from the control unit about the bakkie that was being reported. It was found near the crime scene.

The bakkie fitted the description of the vehicle one of the robbed crew members gave to the police. The man who was reporting the stolen vehicle was immediately arrested and he admitted to lying.

Meanwhile, the driver of the delivery truck was said to have absconded from the crime scene after giving the police his version of the robbery.

The man who was arrested for making the false vehicle theft report then took the police to Tembisa where the driver of the delivery truck and four others were found in possession of R4 200. The men were arrested after they failed to account for the money which was suspected to be from the robbery.
