ALEXANDRA - An Alex man was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates' Court pending further investigation in a case of attempted murder in which police shot dead his alleged accomplice.

An Alex man was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending further investigation for attempted murder.

The court heard that at about 2.30am on 7 November last year, the suspect and an accomplice (who was later shot dead by the police on the same day) allegedly accosted a couple and their friend after they had stopped their vehicle along a street. The three were standing outside the vehicle having an argument.

It is said two men came across the three, and one of the perpetrators allegedly pulled out a gun and both started beating up the friends. The victims reported that their wallets were taken and thrown away after they were emptied. The perpetrators then walked away down 18th Avenue. The victims went searching for the two men in their car and found them on 19th Avenue.

When the suspect saw the victims’ car, he or his accomplice allegedly shot at it but no one was injured. The victims sped off to the friend’s residence on the same street where he ran into his room and locked himself in.

When the friend came out of the room after a while, he found lots of people gathered outside on the street. The suspect was in handcuffs and his accomplice was lying dead on the street. He had been shot by police who responded to a call about the men assaulting the couple who had remained in the car when they dropped their friend off. The deceased was killed after he allegedly shot at the police.

The gun was retrieved and sent for forensic testing to determine if it has been used in other crimes.
