ALEXANDRA – A 26-year-old man (Munwabisi Soko) who had been on the run from justice for two months, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates' Court, charged with the alleged murder of another man on 13 December last year.

A 26-year-old man who had been on the run from the law for two months, appeared in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, charged with the murder of another man.

Munwabisi Soko was arrested in his home in Queenstown on 19 February and appeared in court on 22 February, charged with the murder of Luvuyo Mpontsana on 13 December last year.

The court heard that at about 9.30pm on the day, Soko went to a tavern in Alex where he found the deceased’s 23-year-old girlfriend, Sinethemba Macithi, who lived in the same yard as the accused but occupied different rooms, drinking with two other men. Soko allegedly pulled her hair from behind and accused her of having an affair with one of the two men.

This caused a fight between Soko and the man he accused of the affair. After they were separated, Soko allegedly left but vowed that the fight had not ended.

The deceased’s girlfriend also left afterwards and, when she got home, the deceased unlocked the door to let her in. Before she could close the door, Soko allegedly forced himself in, armed with a knife. The deceased asked him what he wanted and Soko allegedly stabbed him once in the chest and he collapsed.

Soko allegedly tried, but failed, to stab the deceased’s girlfriend, who escaped. He allegedly chased Macithi down the street, throwing objects at her. She was hit on the head and this caused her to fall but she managed to get up and continued running until she got to a group of men. This allegedly forced Soko to deviate.

The men took her back to her place where she claimed to have fainted after finding her boyfriend lying face down in a pool of blood.

He was declared dead by Emergency Management Services while the girlfriend was taken to Edenvale Hospital where she was treated for three days and released.

Soko escaped and was on the run until his arrest.

The case continues.
