Morningside man allegedly killed by men fleeing botched robbery

ALEXANDRA - Four men said to be from Alex were on 22 February, remanded in custody by the Alex Magistrates Court for an alleged murder on 20 February of a Morningside man they came across as they fled from another crime scene.

The court heard that at about 6.30pm on the day the men, said to have been escaping from a botched housebreaking nearby after an alarm went off, alledly came across the victim who was reversing a motor vehicle out of a property with two occupants in the car. One of the four accused was said to have approached from the driver’s side and, without warning, allegedly shot the driver in the head.

The passenger in the front seat managed to get out of the vehicle and run into the house and press the panic button. Meanwhile, the accused were said to have dragged the deceased driver out of the car together with the second passenger who was in the back of the car.

The Community Action Patrol agency alerted by the panic button was quick to arrive on the scene and arrested the four suspects before they could escape. A gun, presumed to be the murder weapon, was recovered, together with clothing belonging to the accused. All of which have been sent for ballistic and forensic testing while the investigation continues.

One of the accused was said to be out on bail for a house robbery case committed in Midrand five years ago.

The suspects will reappear in court on 29 February.
