Man rescued from locked toilet

ALEXANDRA - A man was rescued by Emergency Management Services (EMS) from a locked toilet in a park in Tsutsumani on 13 February.

The man was discovered by children who were playing in the park. They heard a voice from the toilet and when they went to investigate they saw the man lying on the toilet floor, as though in serious pain.

The children reported the discovery to their parents and, together with community members, they went to investigate. The Alex EMS were called and they forced open the door to rescue the man. EMS suspected the man might have been either homeless or on the run and used the park’s toilet as a hideout.

They suspected that he gained entry into the toilet through a broken window. Inside the toilet, EMS said they found open condom packets, clothes, a calculator and a book with names in it.

EMS said they suspected the man had been using the toilet cubicle as a refuge for a long time. He was visibly weak and was taken to Edenvale General Hospital.

EMS called Alex police but they never showed up. Alex Police Cluster spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said he was unaware of the incident or that Alex police had failed to respond to the call. “I will have to find out before I can comment on the matter as I am not aware of it,” he said.
