Residents apprehend suspected armed robber

ALEXANDRA - Community members fed-up with the spiraling crime in township assisted a robbery victim apprehend one of his two assailants.

Community members who are fed up with spiraling crime in Alex assisted a robbery victim by apprehending one of his two alleged assailants.

According to Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Mphakela, a man was walking along Alfred Nzo Street near Ekukhanyisweni Primary School with his cousin at about 8.30pm on 29 January when they were approached by two men.

One of their assailants allegedly produced a firearm and demanded money and cellphones from the victims. The second suspect took out a butcher’s knife and started searching the man. His cousin managed to flee the scene.

They robbed the man of his wallet which contained R150 and a cellphone worth more than R1 000. The criminals then attempted to rob two women passersby. The man then shouted for help and community members apprehended one of the alleged robbers.

The armed suspect ran away and police arrested his accomplice. He is expected to appear at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on charges of armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

Police have launched a manhunt for his accomplice and have appealed to anyone who might know the whereabouts of the suspect to come forward.
