Suspect flags down cop in vehicle and then fires shots at him

ALEXANDRA - A 39 year old Alex man was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrate Court for attempted murder of a police officer on duty.

An Alex man (39) was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on a charge of attempted murder of a police officer on duty.

The court heard that at midday on 4 January this year, the accused, in the company of two others, allegedly waved down the plain clothes police officer and his passenger in a red Citi-Golf near the corner of 12th and Richard Baloyi avenues.

The accused is said to have approached the car and pointed a gun at the officer while hurling expletives. He also allegedly grabbed the car keys and threw them on the street. The officer got out of the car to confront the accused who shot at the officer but missed. The policeman fled with the gunman firing more shots at him.

The passenger is said to have remained in the car during the incident. The accused and his friends then left, and after a while the officer returned to the car and one of the accused’s companions came and gave the officer his car keys.

The accused then apparently returned and allegedly fired more shots at the officer and his passenger, forcing them to flee.

Later, the officer reported the incident and the accused was arrested after a tip-off from the public.

The suspect will appear in court once the investigation is completed.
