In the footsteps of Vikings

JOBURG – Waterfalls surge down snow-capped mountain tops to eventually slow down and gently flow into pristine rivers, which in turn empty into the magnificent fjords of Norway.

This is the journey Sarah Whitehead, a member of the Johannesburg Hiking Club, who would like to whisk community members away as she speaks about her adventures while hiking through the land of Odin and the birthplace of the mighty Vikings.

An invitation by club stated, “After exploring the picturesque harbour town of Bergen – and being horrified by the prices of bottled water in the Norwegian grocery stores – Whitehead and her husband Warren travelled north to a guest farmhouse located on the edge of Sognefjord in northern Norway.

“This was their base to hike the majestic fjord region, which included trekking and climbing highlights such as the Valley of the Waterfalls and the Jostedal Glacier, the largest glacier in mainland Europe.”

Whitehead will host a talk on her amazing explorations of Norway, which will include a photo gallery slide show and refreshments, at Greenside Primary School on 9 February at 7.30pm. Entrance to the event is R25 per person.

Club members, as well as local adventure-seeking residents, are welcome to attend along with friends and family.
