The City of Johannesburg has congratulated ‘a great young person’ and a resident of Region E, Jonathan Maliboho, after he was named as the LeadSA Youth Hero Award winner for December last year.

Maliboho was given the award for his tireless work and initiatives to teach disadvantaged children in Alexandra the game of chess through his Hlalefang Alexandra Chess Club, a non-profit organisation he established in 2014.

The City’s Region E director Liziwe Ntshinga-Makoro described Maliboho as ‘a prominent, responsible and dedicated individual who has earned… distinction in implementing and introducing chess in and around Alexandra and its surrounding areas’.

Maliboho’s chess initiatives are designed to influence the development of an academic and recreational chess environment in Alexandra through partnerships with the township’s primary and high schools.

A total of 20 schools in the greater Alexandra area has shown enthusiasm for the game and the subsequent chess tournaments, workshops and holiday programmes he has been organising.

“The City of Johannesburg takes this opportunity to wish Jonathan all the best in his future endeavours and may he encourage more young people to follow their passion,” said Ntshinga-Makoro.
