Lone reservist busts three suspects

Three men were granted bail of R1 000 each by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for an alleged housebreaking and robbery case committed in September last year in Vorna Valley, Midrand.

They will reappear in court for a further hearing at a later date.

The trio was apprehended before they were able to disappear with the items allegedly stolen from a home in a complex secured by a private security company.

The court heard that on 16 September, the victim left his house for work in Pretoria at 5.45am after locking the doors, windows and the garage door.

At 2.10pm, he received a call from a neighbour informing him of the break-in. The victim immediately left work and when he got home he found the gate and some burglar bars in the house broken and his plasma TV and sports bag missing. A crowbar was found in the house and is suspected to have been used in the robbery.

Meanwhile the same day at around midday, a police reservist travelling in his private vehicle in Olievenbosch, Midrand, noticed a Toyota Tazz being driven in a reckless manner heading towards Diepsloot. He tried to wave it down but the three occupants sped off, only to have the vehicle’s bonnet pop open and block their view of the road. This led to them hitting a roadside kerb forcing them to stop after two of its tyres burst. The three suspects attempted to flee, but the reservist apprehended them and called for backup.

The suspects and vehicle were searched and all items fitting the description of goods stolen at the house were recovered and later returned to the victim.
