MEC hands out uniforms to less fortunate pupils

ALEXANDRA - Gauteng MEC for Finance, Barbara Creecy visited Bovet Primary School on opening day and took the opportunity to hand out school uniforms to 100 less fortunate pupils.

Gauteng MEC for Finance, Barbara Creecy, visited Bovet Primary School in Alex on opening day and took the opportunity to hand out school uniforms to 100 less fortunate pupils.

Most of the beneficiaries of the uniform handout come from child-headed households and those who have lost one of their breadwinning parents. Creecy said most of the uniform beneficiaries were also on the government supported school feeding scheme.

At Lyndhurst Primary School, more than 200 less fortunate children were also being supported by the government. Both schools were part of the pilot Smart Schools Programme which involved the introduction of paperless classrooms through the rolling out of tablets and laptops to both pupils and teachers respectively.

Creecy commended the two schools, saying both of them were functional and were ready to perform in the pilot twinning and Smart Schools programmes.

On Bovet primary, Creecy said the Gauteng Department of Education was in the process of developing a 10-year plan to address infrastructure challenges and move away from prefabricated classrooms.

Bovet is currently one of the many schools in Alexandra with a number of prefabricated classrooms still being utilised for learning purposes.
