Security guard and suspect die in Alex shootout

ALEXANDRA - Police have launched a massive manhunt for two suspects who escaped in a shootout incident with security guards next to the Freedom Supermarket.

Alex police have launched a massive manhunt for two suspects involved in a shootout with security guards next to the Freedom Supermarket in the Pan Africa Mall.

The third suspect was fatally shot during the shootout when the armed men shot at security guards at 6am on 12 January. “A security guard, who was badly wounded in the head during the incident, was rushed to hospital but died later in the day,” said Alex police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela.

According to Maphakela, the suspects are said to have approached non-uniformed security guards on a property next to Freedom Supermarket where construction work of the new shops is underway.

Without any verbal communication, the suspects are said to have opened fire on the guards who returned the ‘favour’ with their own firearms and fatally wounded one of the suspects while his two accomplices fled the scene.

Maphakela said the motive for the shooting is still unknown and police have appealed to members of the community who might know about the incident or know the suspects at large to come forward.
