Despite their tender age, Iphuteng Primary School pupils proved their awareness of HIV/Aids and its deadly effects on society during the commemoration of World Aids Day.

Pupils, teachers and invited guests congregated to mark this event for the second consecutive year. Pupils created awareness of this pandemic in creative ways through poems, songs, drama and traditional dances. The message was about prevention methods, good nutrition, testing and adherence to treatment. It was told how the disease caused misery for families, creating a population of orphaned and vulnerable children, and child- and granny-headed households.

Teacher Lizzy Mashiloane said the event was also an opportunity for the children to share solidarity and to motivate those impacted by the disease not to lose hope. She added that the commemoration would be part of the school’s annual calendar of events.
