Encouraging a better understanding on Disability Day

JOHANNESBURG – Disability Day or the International Day of People with Disability falls on 3 December and is aimed at encouraging a better understanding of people affected with any sort of disability.

The day, which has been promoted by the United Nations since 1992, also aims to help people become more aware of the rights, dignity and welfare of disabled people. Disability Day is not only about mental or physical disabilities but encompasses all known disabilities, from autism to Down’s syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

The history of Disability Day dates back to 1976 when the United Nations General Assembly decided that 1981 should be the International Year of Disabled Persons. Five years passed between the making of that decision and the actual Year of Disabled Persons, but a number of things were addressed such as the disabled being equalised, and plans were made to ensure the disabled took part fully in community life, enjoying all of the rights and benefits non-disabled citizens have.

On 3 December, a number of activities, talks and campaigns will take place to raise funds and awareness for those who have disabilities.
