Signs of heatstroke in dogs

JOBURG - Summer is here and temperatures are rising to levels that could be unbearable for your pets. AnimalTalk, a magazine about responsible pet ownership, has offered signs for heat stroke in dogs.

Jack enjoys some sun but his owner, Joni Tollner, keeps him cool during the heatwave by giving him ice cubes to chew, or spritzing him with cold water.

Editor Noleen Fourie said, “Heat stroke can be deadly. If you think your dog has heatstroke, get the dog to a vet immediately.”

Signs of heat stroke in dogs include:

Excessive or exaggerated panting
Weakness
Lethargy
Drooling
High fever
Dark red gums
Your pet collapses
Rapid heartbeat
Staring or an anxious expression
Unresponsiveness to commands and surroundings
Warm or dry skin.
