Man awaits sentencing for cellphone thefts

ALEXANDRA - A Wynberg man who its claimed to be notorious is in custody awaiting sentencing after being found guilty of theft from his neighbours by the Alexandra Magistrate Court.

A Wynberg man was remanded in custody pending sentencing by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court after being found guilty of theft from two female neighbours.

The date for his sentencing is still to be announced.

The court heard that Freedom Chawe (34) of 2nd Street, Wynberg who was with two friends, robbed the victims of two cellphones at gunpoint at about 7.40pm on 2 January this year. The women robbed on the street next to their flat where Chawe also stayed. They reported only Chawe to the police as the one who had robbed them and he was arrested seven days later on 9 January.

Chawe claimed to have been with his girlfriend at the time, but he failed to produce her as a witness. It was said she refused to testify on his behalf. The court also found Chawe to have previous criminal records.
