Chiefs and Sundowns for Telkom final

JOBURG - The sheer brilliance of goal minder Brilliant Khuzwayo has set up Kaizer Chiefs for a showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the Telkom Knockout.

The final will take place on 16 December at a venue still to be confirmed by the Premier Soccer League in consultation with cup sponsors Telkom.

Chiefs qualified after beating fellow Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates 6-5 on sudden death penalties at a well-attended seminfinal at the FNB Stadium after the two were deadlocked 0-0 after ninety minutes as well as 30 minutes of extra time.

The lottery of penalty kicks then beckoned for both teams, though Pirates could have easily wrapped up the game had it not been for lack of composure and absence of clinical finishing by the Buccaneers striking pair of Thamsanqa Gabuza and Kermit Erasmus.

Gabuza was the guiltier of the two strikers as he wasted numerous glaring chances, including two glorious opportunities when he was faced one-on-one with Chiefs keeper, Brilliant Khuzwayo or maybe Khuzwayo’s brilliance on the day saved Amakhosi the blushes.

Amakhosi too had their fair share of attempts at goal but not glaring opportunities as those wasted by the striking pair of Gabuza and Erasmus, both of whom were later substituted for Lehlogonolo Majoro and Gift Motupa respectively.

Wasteful on the Chiefs side were George Lebese and Camaldine Abraw, both of whom were substituted in favour of Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Lorenzo Gordinho respectively.

For their part, Sundowns clobbered a determined SuperSport United 3-1 with goals through the boots of Colombian striker Leonardo Castro, Thabo Nthethe and Bongani ‘Ben 10’ Zungu.

The United one came through a brilliantly taken free kick by David Mathebula outside the box; just three minutes after Downs scored their first at the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville outside Pretoria.

The Brazilians could have been three up before the half time break as two goals from Castro and Themba Zwane were adjudged as having been scored through the use of their hands.
