Attempted murder accused in custody after year on the run

ALEXANDRA - A former security guard who spent a year on the run for alleged attempted murder was arrested and appeared at Alexandra Magistrate Court.

A former security guard who spent a year on the run for alleged attempted murder has been arrested and appeared at Alexandra Magistrates’ Court.

He was remanded in custody pending further investigation before his next court appearance on a date to be announced.

The court heard that in July last year, the man, who was a security guard at a Wynberg ceiling company, acted aggressively towards another employee of the firm. When asked to desist, it is claimed he instead produced a knobkerrie and attempted to hit, but missed, the employee.

The employee is said to have kicked the knobkerrie away when the guard attempted to pick it up after dropping it. The employee then pushed the accused to the ground but when he got up, the security guard had a gun in his hand and fired a shot, hitting the employee in the groin. As the victim collapsed, the accused allegedly fired a second shot but missed.

The accused then fled and police couldn’t find him at his known local address. Investigations revealed that he had no firearm licence. He was traced to his rural KwaZulu-Natal home where he was arrested in June this year.

The victim was treated and has recovered from his injuries.
