Fired cop a suspect in hijacking case

ALEXANDRA - Police have revealed that one of the three suspected hijackers arrested in Alex on 29 October after a high-speed chase was a former police constable who was dismissed from the force in 2013 for possession of stolen goods.

Alex police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, said the 33-year-old man was fired while stationed at Garankuwa Police Station.

Maphakela said the men were suspected to be part of a gang which had earlier hijacked a truck which was carrying cellphones and was travelling from Kempton Park to Midrand.

They were spotted by Sandton police on the N3 driving a blue VW Golf 7 which had a blue light on the dashboard. A police check of the car revealed that it wasn’t one of their fleet cars and had been reported stolen from Kensington earlier this month.

When police tried to stop them, one of the men pointed a gun at the officers before they sped off and exited into Alexandra at the Vincent Tshabalala Road off-ramp with police in hot pursuit.

The men were arrested after fleeing from their vehicle which was damaged after hitting a speed bump in Eastbank as they headed towards Alexandra on Florence Maphosho Avenue. Maphakela added that two of the men were in police uniform and all three were flushed out of a house they were hiding in, with the public’s assistance.

Two kidnapped crewmen of the hijacked truck were found in the abandoned car.

The police recovered a dashboard blue light, a roof blue light, police reflector jackets, two 9mm rifles and one revolver from the hijackers’ vehicle.

They will appear at the Alex Magistrates’ Court facing charges of kidnapping, attempted murder, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition, possession of a stolen car and impersonating police officers.
