An Alex man will spend five years in prison after the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court recently found him guilty of vehicle theft.

Bafana Dlamini (28) of 17th Avenue, was sentenced for stealing an Opel Cadette valued at R18 000 in Tembisa, which he was found stripping at his home by Alex police.

The court heard from the owner that the vehicle had been parked in his yard but he found it missing on 30 June and reported it stolen to the police.

On 4 July, police patrolling in Alex saw four men stripping a car at Dlamini’s home and when they inquired about its owner, Dlamini failed to produce any documentation. The four were arrested, and in court, Dlamini admitted to the charge. His co-accused were found to have been assisting Dlamini unknowingly and were released.

Passing judgment on Dlamini, the Magistrate said despite the value of the car, it was of particular value to its owner and Dlamini had no right to deny him the right to its possession.
