Dumping remains a huge problem

ALEXANDRA - The Community Works Programme (CWP), part of government's publics works programme involving the community, has urged for a different approach to curb rampant dumping and littering in Alex.

The amount of filth in the township concerns the CWP and some residents who worry about the health hazards.

The programme’s manager, Portia Sachane, said some residents were apathetic to the littering problem. “They get perturbed when urged not to litter,” she said.

“Their excuse is that keeping the streets clean will result in the cleaners losing their jobs.”

She added that residents opted to litter and did not use the plastic bags issued free by the city council to dispose of their rubbish in designated places for street cleaners to collect.

Sachane said that without new approaches being tried and residents changing their attitude towards this challenge, the problem would continue. Some dump spots, she added, accumulated mounds of rubbish less than an hour after they were cleaned.

Some of the rubbish included human waste and sometimes foetuses, which traumatised the cleaners. She added that some of the dumping sites were hiding places for rapists and muggers who terrorised the community.

“They also are breeding places for rats which are a health hazard, and sometimes [the rats attack] babies,” she concluded.
