An Alex woman was recently remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for the alleged poisoning and murdering her 11-month-old baby.
She will reappear in court after further investigations and forensic testing of the poison have been completed.
Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the woman was arrested at her home on 12 October, the same day of the incident and death of the baby. The baby was rushed to Alex Clinic and was certified dead on arrival.
Maphakela said the baby’s grandmother informed the police that she saw the baby vomiting through her mouth and nose and the child’s mother allegedly holding a bottle containing what was suspected to be methylated spirits, the suspected poison. The grandmother also told Alex police that the accused allegedly admitted to giving the baby two spoons of the bottle’s contents, but couldn’t explain for what reason.
