New Public Transport Interface in Sandton

SANDTON - In celebration of Transport Month and the EcoMobility Festival, which takes place during October, the Gautrain and Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport hosted the opening of the Public Transport Interface on 20 September.

 

In operation since April, the Public Transport Interface is located in the Gautrain Sandton Station and allows taxis, buses and tuk-tuks the opportunity to use the station as a connection between their different routes. Head of Gauteng Roads and Transport, Ronald Swartz said October will see a great deal of innovation in public transport with a great emphasis on road safety.

The theme for Transport Month, which will run concurrently with the EcoMobility Festival in Sandton, is, Transport, moving the Gauteng City Region Forward’.

MMC for the City of Johannesburg, Christine Walters, said she was very happy with the programmes set up for Transport Month and urges all residents to become an EcoMobility agent.

She added, “Behind all this there is a healthy lifestyle that we all can benefit from.”

The event saw members of various taxi associations who will work with the provincial government to be integrated into the public transport sector.

MEC of Roads and Transport Ismail Vadi commented that current public transport models do not include funding for minibus taxis and they, therefore, will host a series of discussions to integrate the taxi associations into the provincial budget.

Vadi added that October will see great integration between the public and private sectors of transport. “We are steadfastly committed to the modernisation of the public transport industry,” concluded Vadi.
