Sandton SPCA helps over 350 Alex pets

MARLBORO GARDENS - The Sandton SPCA provided more than 350 animals from Alexandra with free medical treatment through the Sandton and Eastern Metro Spa Mobile Clinic Programme on 19 September.

Marketing and public relations officer of Sandton SPCA, Kylie Coleman said, “The Sandton SPCA Mobile Clinic initiative was launched in February 2010 with the main objective of offering animal care services to the underprivileged who have no means of transport and who are unable to afford standard veterinary care.”

The special day was held at East Bank High School in Alexandra, the third annual event hosted at the school, with a record number of 38 volunteers assisting in vaccinating, spraying and de-worming.

Coleman said, “Collars and leads, kindly sponsored by Drysys, were handed out, along with food, blankets and bowls for each animal, as well as treats for their owners.

Committee member of the Sandton SPCA, Deano Maduramuthu, described the day as rewarding. He said, “More than 300 dogs in Alex were attended to by a dedicated crew of volunteers. Many people who came in were genuinely committed to the well-being of their pets. One boy I spoke to proudly referred to his dog as his baby.”

Coleman added, “One of the major objectives of the day was the promotion of the Sandton SPCA’s sterilisation campaign, where free sterilisations were offered to those who agreed to sign up their animals for the procedure.”

Stephanie Brown, chairperson of Sandton SPCA said, “It is so exciting to drive into Alex and see lines of children with their dogs walking towards our mobile clinic to have their beloved dogs vaccinated, de-wormed and checked out by our veterinary volunteers.”

Coleman said, “The Sandton SPCA is foremost about the prevention of cruelty to animals and through empowering the community at events such as these, they are able to continue their work and to forward their cause.”
